Getting a new pet is an exciting and fun time! Even if you have been through the joys of pet ownership before it is a good time to make sure you can cover the basics so that your pet can look forward to a happy and healthy future.
We have included a few important points to prioritise in the early weeks of having your new pet at home:
- Book a health check with your vet. The vet and team will be able to answer any questions you may have as well as give you the relevant information regarding preventive healthcare.
- Vaccinations. Most pets would have received their first vaccination with the breeder. It is important to book the second vaccination within the recommended timeframe.
- Microchipping. Most pets would have been microchipped with the breeder. If they have not it is important to get this done as soon as possible.
- Pet insurance. There are many very good providers available. We recommend to get Pet insurance as early as possible to make sure there will be no exclusions in your policy, therefore providing you with peace of mind. Find out more about Pet Insurance.
- Parasite control. At your first vet check the vet can discuss up to date parasite prevention strategies. Most parasite borne diseases can be easily prevented with a simple monthly treatment.
Socialisation is very important (especially for new puppies). We recommend enrolling your puppy in a puppy school as soon as possible. This is a great way to interact with your puppy and other pet owners. Our nurses also offer consults to discuss the best way to socialise your pet.
